Responsibilities
Oversee the strategic vision and development of the Foundry in consultation with the Foundry Director
Demonstrate foundry capabilities by overseeing pilot projects, plus run an associated research group supported by external grant funding
Create a future workforce by training graduates in high-throughput synthetic biology
Establish and maintain academic and industry connections and collaborations
Take a lead role in business development including attracting new clients to the biofoundry, and recruiting synthetic biology companies to incubate at the biofoundry
Lead and expand the biofoundry team of functional experts including analytical chemists, build experts, fermentation scientists, automation engineers, data scientists and support staff
Revert to a continuing academic role within the School of Natural Sciences after the term as Chief Scientific Officer, developing, convening and teaching relevant units at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Lead and collaborate on research projects in relevant research disciplines, while supervising Higher Degree Research students
Demonstrate personal and professional skills that can enable service and leadership contributions to strengthen the impact and reputation of the School of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Macquarie University.
Requirements
Hold a PhD in molecular science or a relevant discipline with significant contributions to scholarship and research
Demonstrated academic leadership in synthetic biology and a sustained track record in competitive and/or industry research funding and partnerships
Working knowledge of access models to synthetic biology capability, experience managing projects using high throughput biofoundry capabilities and the successful oversight of a sustainable service facility
A track record of coaching, managing and developing a high performing team and fostering a culture of innovation and growth, including a track record of attracting and supervising HDR students to successful completion
Demonstrated teaching experience in delivering high quality and innovative teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in areas relevant to the molecular sciences including the design, delivery, and management of lectures, tutorials, practical classes, and assessments
A demonstrated commitment to promoting and advancing the principles of equity, inclusion and diversity
