Research Fellow (Porous Materials)
Building on its strengths as Australia’s leading regional University, UniSQ’s vision is to be renowned for innovation and excellence in education, student experience, research and engagement. Guided by our core values of respect, integrity and excellence, the University’s Strategic Plan 2021-2025 outlines our commitment to creating and sharing knowledge, transforming lives and solving the problems that matter to our world.
Centre for Future Materials
The Centre for Future Materials (CFM) has gained a reputation for pioneering research and development in engineered fibre composites. CFM prioritises R&D in advanced composite manufacturing, civil composites, smart materials, and geopolymer and concrete. CFM operates a dedicated industry test service for more than 1000 business clients across multiple sectors both nationally and internationally. The testing services, in compliance with national and international standards, ranges from materials characterisation, polymer analysis, mechanical testing and large-scale structural testing.
This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join our research centre and contribute to innovative research to produce fundamental knowledge and applied porous inorganic materials for potential application as proppant.
What you'll do
As the Research Fellow (Porous Materials) you will join the ARC Linkage Project “Low-density high-performance proppants for hydraulic fracturing process” working in collaboration with The University of Queensland and the Southwest Petroleum University in Sichuan, China. This project aims to develop advanced low-density proppants (LDP) for the hydraulic fracturing process which has recently revolutionized the oil/gas industry. The key innovations include new material design and experimental approaches to realise the porous structure of proppant with low-density and high mechanical strength. You will also facilitate the laboratory activity (e.g. proppant fluid conductivity) at UQ’s School of Mechanical Engineering and build the porous inorganic material capacity at UniSQ’s Springfield laboratory.
What will help you succeed
Your energy and initiative, combined with your strong knowledge and skills in inorganic material synthesis and fluid transportation will be vital to your success in this role. In addition, you will have:
- An honours degree or higher qualification in a related area such as chemical engineering and inorganic materials. Completion of a Doctoral qualification will be highly regarded.
- Research experience on porous material and fluid transportation within porous materials.
- Excellent workshop and laboratory skills, including the assembly, commissioning and maintenance of complex apparatus, and the application of such hardware to the acquisition of data.
- High level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
