The Thermal Energy Group within the School of Engineering works across multiple projects in partnership supported by Australian Renewable Energy Agency and the Heavy Industry Low-Carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC). This is an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in renewable energy systems and heavy industry decarbonisation.
About the Role:
Materials Scientist/Chemist/Metallurgist:
Requires a person with a strong materials science/chemistry background to analyse hydrogen reduction a range of iron ore samples using a range of equipment spanning tube furnaces, thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA)/DSC and lab-scale fluidised bed reactors, with mass spectrometry (MS) or gas chromatography (GC) plus scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to determine reaction products and by-products and their morphology. Using the data gathered, the appointee will then develop kinetic models of the process that are applicable, so far as possible, over a wide range of temperatures and raw material compositional variations.
Experience with other applicable characterisation techniques, such as electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or titrations, or potentially others, will be considered favourably.
Position is supported with funding from ARENA project “De-risking large-scale Australian fine-ore hydrogen ironmaking” and HILTCRC project “Prevention of sticking in H2 fluidised bed DRI production”.
