About the Role
The bioinformatics software engineer will support a translational research project focused on developing a novel diagnostic method for analysing cell-free DNA in cancer patients.
Based in the Rare Disease Oncogenomics (RADIO) Laboratory, the role involves working with next-generation sequencing data to develop a liquid biopsy test for cancers of unknown primary, as well as contributing to innovative genomics projects with international partners like Illumina.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Contribute to the collection and analysis of genomics data from next-generation sequencing technologies, and design and manage databases for complex biological datasets.
- Develop and maintain a web-based portal for data visualisation, integrate new algorithms into existing workflows, and ensure code quality and documentation for reproducibility.
- Participate in training and conferences, and support research efforts by collating results for presentation and publication.
Who We Are Looking For
You will have demonstrated experience in software development, with proficiency in Python and R, and a strong understanding of database management and bioinformatics pipelines for high-throughput sequencing.
Your attention to detail, organisational & communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams are key, as is your capacity to work independently while following project directions.
You are motivated to learn new bioinformatics techniques and technologies, with excellent communication skills to ensure reliable data management and timely project delivery.
You will also have:
- Bachelor of Science or Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proven ability to develop, maintain, and optimise bioinformatics pipelines.
- Experience in developing web-based tools or applications for data analysis and visualisation.
- Unrestricted right to live and work in Australia.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
