Responsibilities
  • Lead the institutional response to the legal and compliance needs of the University.
  • Provide expert and strategic legal counsel at an executive leadership level.
  • Provide leadership in the identification, mitigation and management of legal risk, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Advise on matters relating to ethics, regulatory requirements, conflicts of interest, intellectual property, technology transfer and collaborations.
  • Monitor legislative changes and provide updates to the University community.
  • Oversee the management of all litigation involving the University, including external legal representation.
  • Manage the provision of legal services to ensure timely and effective delivery.
  • Demonstrate experience or aptitude for oversight of governance matters in relevant sectors.
  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, review and update of University policies.
  • Represent the University in professional organisations and maintain relationships with peer institutions.
  • Provide leadership of the people and teams within the Office of the General Counsel.

Requirements
  • Admitted to practise as a lawyer in NSW.
  • Demonstrable leadership experience in a corporate legal environment.
  • Strong knowledge of a broad range of legal practice including property law, administrative law, contracts, procurement, health law, intellectual property law, disputes, IT, corporate law and employment law.
  • Experience leading teams and managing people.
  • Personal attributes of integrity, fairness, collaborative approach, initiative and accountability.
  • Knowledge of or experience in the Higher Education sector is highly desirable.
