Western Sydney University has established a sector-leading program to strengthen career pathways for casual academic staff by creating the equivalent of 150 full time positions by 1 March 2025. The WSU decasualisation program will play a significant role in reducing the level of insecure work in the Australian higher education sector. With this in mind, the University is looking to recruit candidates it can invest in and develop over the long term, including training over the confirmation period to support candidates to retain stable, ongoing employment.
Successful candidates will undertake teaching, while also having the opportunity to develop a research portfolio and contribute to the University through governance activities at the School and/or University level.
About the School of Engineering, Design & Built Environment
The School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment is located in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Cluster, together with the School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences, the School of Science, the MARCS Institute and the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment.
The School operates from three of the eleven WSU campuses: Penrith campus, Parramatta South campus and Parramatta City campus. The School offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including research programs that combine advanced academic knowledge with real-life training to suit a range of career needs and interests in the following disciplines: Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering and Industrial Design.
The School conducts world leading research in a number of its disciplinary areas and has several research concentrations including the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and the Centre for Smart Modern Construction.
The Civil Engineering discipline has been ranked among the top 75 universities in the world in the latest (2023) ARWU ranking.
About the Role
Join the School of Engineering, Design & Built Environment at Western Sydney University as an Associate Lecturer in Architecture.
The Associate Lecturer in Architecture will engage in a range of academic activities, including the development, design, and delivery of teaching in relevant areas. The appointee will continue to enhance their research expertise and scholarship portfolio, contributing to the School’s research outcomes, and will supervise undergraduate (Honours) and postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students as appropriate.
The rapid urban growth of the Greater Western Sydney region provides the context for establishing unique architecture courses at Western Sydney University. The recent professional accreditation of its Master of Architecture (Urban Transformation) program has solidified the University’s role in this context. The School is now seeking applications for the position of Associate Lecturer in Architecture to join an expanding disciplinary team, deliver teaching to a rapidly growing student cohort, and contribute to the development of thematic innovative research.
The Associate Lecturer in Architecture will be an academic with considerable relevant experience, demonstrating knowledge and expertise in current and emerging interdisciplinary content applicable to teaching and research in architecture and construction. The Associate Lecturer will be well-versed in both the local context and international cutting-edge design practice. The role requires the ability to teach design across all levels in the architecture studio.
The Associate Lecturer in Architecture will be eligible for registration as an Architect in Australia, with a portfolio of design projects and/or creative work and an awareness of digital software related to architecture and design.
This is a full-time, ongoing position commencing from January 2025. This position is based at Western’s Parramatta South Campus, although travel to other campuses of the University may be required.
Eligibility
Successful candidates will be subject to a two-year confirmation period and must provide evidence at the time of application that they:
- are an Aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islander person; and
- hold a Masters degree or demonstrated substantial completion towards completion of a higher qualification; and
- have not previously held an ongoing position with an Australian Higher Education provider in the previous 3 years.
Candidates must submit evidence of the above requirements and any evidence they have of successful teaching results, such as Student Feedback on Teaching survey outcomes, at the time of application.
