The Opportunity
Are you passionate about bees and their crucial role in our ecosystem? Western’s Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE) is seeking an experienced Research Fellow in Crop Pollination and Apiculture to join their team!
As a Research Fellow in Crop Pollination and Apiculture, you will be at the forefront of delivering innovative current research projects aimed at enhancing agriculture and crop pollination as well as providing HDR supervision and teaching expertise in these areas. In particular, the Research Fellow will initially play a major role in conducting original research and delivering milestone objectives for three current projects funded by Hort Frontiers, focussing respectively on:
- developing stingless bees as crop pollinators,
- assessing pollination-dependence in key crops and cultivars, and
- assessing the effects of bumble bees as invasive pollinators in Tasmania.
Your role will involve developing new methods for managing bee hives more effectively for use in crop pollination services, conducting experiments, assessing the pollination-dependence of key crops, and assessing the influence of invasive bumblebees in Tasmanian ecosystems. Additionally, you will collaborate with other senior members of the HIE Pollination Team in strategic planning and logistical oversight of the Pollination Team activities, ensuring the success of our research programs. In the medium term you will play a role in leading the development of new research and allied activities in apiculture and crop pollination.
The Research Fellow will liaise with external collaborators and end-users (growers and beekeepers) to communicate research findings at regular meetings and to develop research ideas. The research work will also be communicated at scientific meetings and published in high-impact international journals. A tailored career mentoring plan will be developed and will include opportunities to contribute to teaching and supervising Masters and PhD students as well as leadership and engagement.
