About the Role

As an Associate Dance Lecturer you will have the opportunity to teach and inspire students in a variety of contemporary dance practices, including technical training, improvisation and choreography. You will facilitate classes that challenge students technically while helping them to grow artistically. You will foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment that values collaboration and reflection.
Reporting to the Head of Dance, the Associate Lecturer in Dance will play a pivotal role in delivering studio-based dance subjects within the BFA curriculum. The successful candidate will teach into core subjects such as Dance Labs 1-6 and supervise undergraduate performance projects.
This position is ideal for an educator with experience across various dance genres, including contemporary, street dance, jazz, non-Western dance, and ballet, and who maintains active ties to both professional and academic dance communities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Teach studio-based dance classes at all levels including dance techniques, choreography, improvisation and interdisciplinary practices
- Supervise project-based learning at Undergraduate level
- Deliver seminars and tutorials on dance theory and discourse as required
- Facilitate student engagement and participation through portfolio-based teaching and learning
- Initiate and develop high quality subject materials
- Undertake consultation with students and marking and assessment as appropriate
- Undertake subject coordination along with associated administrative tasks
- Effective management and coordination of casual staff members
- Conduct research through active involvement in professional activity
Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a passionate educator to shape the next generation of dancers while contributing to the development of an inclusive, innovative dance program at the University of Melbourne.
The role demands a student-centred approach to pedagogy, with a focus on advancing the field through research and evidence-based methods. The appointee will help strengthen VCA Dance’s strong community ties and foster international networks. Experience teaching diverse student populations will be highly regarded.
You will also have:
- Established reputation as a Dance Artist with a demonstrated record of excellence in professional practice
- A PhD or Masters degree will be highly regarded but equivalent professional practice will be actively considered
- Demonstrated experience in teaching excellence at the undergraduate level in a tertiary institution
- Ability to work collegially as a member of Dance programs, and with other staff across the VCA and more broadly across the university
- Demonstrated capacity to deliver training programs in a cost-effective way
- Experience in developing resource materials for learning and teaching
- Strong interpersonal skills, recognising and respecting diversity and personal differences
