About This Opportunity
An excellent opportunity is available for a Principal Research Fellow, Level D, research focused position based within the Institute for Social Science Research. In this position, you will lead business development and partnership building while overseeing a portfolio of commissioned research and evaluation projects. This role emphasises innovative, place-based approaches to research and evaluation that promote a fair and just society, addressing the needs of government and industry partners. Additionally, the position may involve contributing to strategic research infrastructure projects.
Collaboration with other researchers and the Institute’s Research Development Team is essential for securing project funding and delivering high-quality outcomes. The appointee will also provide training and supervision for Higher Degree by Research students and research staff, and actively engage in service activities that align with the Institute’s strategic direction.
Key Responsibilities
- Research: Provide leadership in developing the Institute’s research and evaluation capabilities, focusing on innovative place-based approaches and spatial analyses, while contributing to national research infrastructure initiatives on behalf of the Institute and University.
- Lead funding initiatives as chief investigator for various research projects, ensuring high-quality outputs through best practices, managing budgets and contractual obligations, and fostering strong internal and external relationships to enhance the Institute's reputation and knowledge transfer.
- Teaching: Contribute to the development and delivery of the Institute’s short courses and customised training for partners, while also engaging in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as opportunities arise in relevant areas of expertise.
- Supervision and Researcher Development: Provide leadership in research and evaluation best practices while managing Institute research staff and mentoring Higher Degree by Research students, fostering their development through feedback and professional growth, and collaborating with leadership to enhance research practices and promptly address any conflicts or grievances.
- Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You
- PhD in social or behavioural sciences with a strong international publication record in reputed journals and/or significant non-traditional research outputs relevant to end users.
- Proven research and evaluation leadership in place-based, environmental approaches, equity, and wellbeing, with expertise in spatial analyses and data visualization.
- Successful track record in securing and managing substantial external research funding from institutional and commercial sources.
- Experience in bringing together internal stakeholders and external partners to develop and manage research and evaluation projects.
- Skilled in using innovative research and translation methods to engage community, industry, and government partners.
- Experience supervising Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to negotiate complex issues and work effectively with diverse groups.
- Strong team management capabilities, including planning, workload management, mentoring, and fostering workplace culture and wellbeing.
