About This Opportunity
The Principal Officer, Communications and Engagement contributes to and implements the strategic plan for Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), raises the profile of the Institute’s research impact, and enhances its reputation with key internal and external partners and stakeholders.
This position supports all the SMI research centres, strategic programs, JKTech and SMI’s International Centre of Excellence in Chile. The position will also act as back up for the SMI Communications and Engagement Manager and support other members in the communications and engagement team as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Proactively seek to promote SMI content to maintain and build the Institute’s profile with industry partners, government and other decision-makers.
- Produce original content for a variety of channels including but not limited to targeted EDMs, newsletters, researcher profiles, research impact stories and website content.
- Monitor and report on the reach and engagement of the Institute’s activities and identify areas for improvement.
- Assist in managing the SMI website and associated sites.
- Contribute to the Institute’s social media platforms by generating and distributing content and sharing management of social media channels.
- Support the development of video content for social media and websites.
- Provide marketing and promotional support for key strategic events, engagement initiatives and professional development courses.
- Collaborate with the central UQ Marketing and Communication team on potential media stories.
- Work collaboratively with the central UQ Research Communications team on implementing operational plans.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Institute’s stakeholder database.

About You
- Completion of a relevant degree with subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Demonstrated experience working in communications and engagement for a key portfolio and supporting strategic organisational goals.
- Demonstrated experience translating complex research for a non-academic audience.
- Strong verbal and written skills including a demonstrated ability to write with clarity and precision for multiple audiences.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
- Thorough knowledge of web content management systems, email marketing software such as Vision6, and CRMs.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively use social media platforms to engage and grow audiences.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
- Highly developed organisational and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, etc.
