The Faculty of Science and Engineering Technical Operations Team is seeking a suitably qualified Scientific Officer, to provide technical and operational support across the laboratory teaching and research of the School of Natural Sciences.
Reporting to the technical team lead you will be actively engaged in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of teaching and research laboratories through the provision of high-quality technical support. You will procure and prepare teaching material, setup undergraduate practical classes, and provide technical support to undergraduate classes and to research laboratories. You will have the opportunity to utilise your working knowledge of scientific equipment as well as health and safety by assisting with technical queries, delivering laboratory inductions, and training users on equipment. You will be a skilled communicator and will be able to work independently and adapt to be part of a high performing team.
About You
You will have completed a degree in biomolecular sciences or a closely related discipline. You have a sound knowledge and understanding of molecular techniques and related equipment. You have good problem-solving skills to troubleshoot technical issues. You can work independently to support undergraduate teaching, academic staff, and HDR students, and have a passion for workplace health and safety. You are an excellent communicator with a proactive nature and are flexible and resilient in your approach. You manage time and resources effectively to successfully plan, prioritise, action, and follow up issues as they arise.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs across a diverse range of disciplines and is home to several world-class research centres and facilities. It is comprised of two research departments and four schools, each with a different scale and/or discipline-specific approach to administration, technical, and infrastructure support for research and teaching.
The Technical Operations team provide specialised technical support services to teaching and research activities of the Faculty. The team covers a broad range of capabilities and expertise across laboratory, specialist facilities and field-based activities that are essential for the smooth functioning of teaching and research within the Faculty.

Essential:
- A degree in Biomolecular Sciences, or closely related discipline or combination of experience, education, and training;
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in microbiology and molecular biology techniques (e.g. culturing bacteria, aseptic techniques, protein production and purification)
- Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining laboratory equipment including troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.
- Demonstrated experience delivering technical support in a teaching and/or research laboratory environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience applying safe work practices to the operations of laboratory environments.
- Demonstrated experience contributing to the development and implementation of protocols, procedures, and/or technical guidelines in laboratory environments.
- Strong track record of communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders in both written and verbal forms.

Salary: Level 5 from $83,580 to $95,029 per annum, plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading.
