Description | The Instructional Designer II (ID2) is responsible for project management and collaboration with Subject Matter Experts, faculty, fellow instructional designers and other stakeholders to maintain, refresh, redesign and build new online learning experiences for a variety of courses while also supporting online instructors as they teach a course.
The ID2 brings considerable experience and expertise in envisioning new courses and proposing substantial revisions to existing courses to maximize student engagement and learning, to facilitate excellent online teaching, and to advance the University’s goal of providing world-class online education.
The ID2 complements all course development by providing and/or facilitating necessary consulting and training to faculty and staff on instructional best practices for adult learners; coaching instructors on the use of computer-based instructional and multimedia applications; assisting with the technical and programmatic developments of assigned projects and applications; and providing assistance with planning and coordinating materials with the course instructor(s) and program director.
This is a hybrid position with the Incumbent required to work onsite at the Portland Maine campus Tuesday-Thursday with the option to work remotely on Monday and Friday. Additional on-campus time may be required as needed.

Responsibilities | Lead and Manage Project Execution: Spearhead the course development process by crafting detailed project timelines in collaboration with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), faculty, and academic program staff. Ensure regular updates and transparent communication with all stakeholders regarding project progress and adaptations.Quality Assurance and Enhancement: Ensure that all projects achieve high standards of quality and add value in addition to meeting deadlines. Regularly engage with program administrators to strategize on the continuous improvement of online programs and curriculum through innovative design and significant course redesigns.Collaborative Course Design: Work closely with faculty to develop and redesign courses that adhere to online instructional best practices, optimizing the learning experience for students and the teaching experience for faculty.Instructional Strategy and Analysis: Conduct thorough analyses of existing courses and consult with faculty to refine design elements, learning objectives, activities, and assessment methods. Recommend instructional tools, media, and methodologies to enhance educational outcomes, including emerging and innovative tools and approaches.Faculty Development and Support: Facilitate and participate in regular course development meetings to offer pedagogical guidance and support to faculty. Provide targeted faculty development initiatives to improve assessment techniques and student achievement.Course Launch and Maintenance: Prepare and oversee the launch of new and existing courses each term, ensuring course consistency and readiness. Maintain and update course materials, including syllabi, calendars, grade book configurations, and links to resources and accessibility.Content Quality and Accessibility: Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and accessibility standards to ensure all course content is inclusive and compliant with Section 508 and ADA guidelines. Conduct thorough quality checks and functionality testing to uphold quality assurance benchmarks.IP Compliance and Ethics: Monitor and ensure compliance with institutional intellectual property guidelines throughout the course development and maintenance processes, including ethical approaches to AI-assisted content production.Responsive Support and Troubleshooting: Provide ongoing support to faculty using online course management tools and respond swiftly to any issues raised by faculty, professional staff or students to minimize disruptions in the learning process.Innovative Technology Integration: Stay current with emerging technologies and educational trends to continuously integrate innovative tools and practices into the learning environment, enhancing both student engagement and instructional effectiveness, adhering to ethical use of technology tools.Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications | Demonstrated knowledge and experience in instructional design principles, online pedagogy, learning science, assessment, and adult learning theory.Instructional Design Prototyping: Ability to quickly prototype and test elements of instructional design to ensure they meet user needs before full-scale implementation.Strong strategic skills in curricular assessment and planning.Knowledge of creating learning experiences or automating content delivery and assessment assisted by AI and ML.Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, skills in video and audio editing and multimedia production techniques for creating engaging content.Ability to use analytics to improve course effectiveness and student engagement, strong analytical and creative thinking skills.Demonstrated ability to plan, strategize, and deliver major instructional design deliverables for online initiatives.Experience with project management software and approaches to manage and iterate on instructional design projects more effectively; proven ability to prioritize projects and activities, analyze processes, assess workload, and suggest improvements. The ability to persuade, lead, motivate, instruct, and act as part of a highly effective team.Demonstrated experience with online teaching and learning programs in higher education or corporate settings, and familiarity with common Learning Management Systems.Experience designing various kinds of assessments and rubrics.Skills in UX design principles to enhance the usability and accessibility of online learning environments.Ability to adapt in a dynamic and rapidly changing team environment under tight deadlines, with creativity and good humor.Enthusiasm for and evidence of ongoing professional development in instructional design and technology to stay abreast of the latest trends and tools.
