Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Corrosion and Biofouling

About the Role
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and suitably qualified Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team for a research project focusing on biofouling and corrosion of marine vessels. This position is open to candidates from diverse engineering and scientific backgrounds, including materials engineering, marine science, chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or microbiology.
The successful candidate will be involved in investigating the efficacy of Marine Growth Protection Systems (MGPS) in preventing fouling and corrosion in marine infrastructure. The research will focus on various performance indicators such as biofouling, abiotic corrosion, and microbiologically influenced corrosion, while considering operational parameters and environmental conditions that impact performance.
This project is funded by the ARC Training Centre for Biofilm Research and Innovation, a leading research and training centre in Australia. The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with the Chief Investigator and partner investigators at the Defence Science and Technology Group. Responsibilities include leading the design and execution of the research project in collaboration with the research team.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative biofilm research and collaborate with industry partners in the maritime, water, and other industries. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing solutions to enhance efficiency in the maritime and defence sectors, water quality monitoring, and addressing health and safety issues related to biofilms.
Successful candidates must be eligible to gain an Australian Defence Clearance and meet International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Further information about this role can be found in the attached position description.
About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
- Experience in performing laboratory tests relevant to marine corrosion
- Experience in performing field tests relevant to marine corrosion
- Experience with analytical techniques relevant to corrosion studies (e.g. SEM, XRD, optical microscopy, 3D optical profiling, water chemistry, etc.).
- Ability to apply, adapt and develop methods relevant to the study of marine biofilms, including environmental microbiology techniques, or the demonstrated ability to acquire this expertise in the short-term
Qualifications
- A PhD in a relevant area of metallurgy, corrosion, chemical engineering, chemistry, marine science/biology, microbiology, physics or other associated discipline
- The level associated with this position requires a postgraduate degree
