About This Opportunity
The Work, Health and Safety (WHS) Coordinator provides strategic, high-level support to the Health, Safety, Wellness and Facilities Manager, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology (EAIT). This position includes responsibilities for Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) management of a portfolio of WHS risks and business areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Workplace Health, Safety and Wellness (HSW)
Lead and implement innovative projects with the HSW and Facilities Manager and School Manager to create operational efficiencies and improve workplace health, safety, and wellness.
- Advise and support School and Faculty stakeholders on Workplace Health and Safety Act responsibilities and best practices, including developing WHS Management Plans; assist in WHS report writing, data analysis, and corrective actions.
- Identify hazards, propose/implement risk control measures and management strategies, advise on risk assessment requirements for laboratories and research projects, participate in OH&S committees and comply with Queensland WHS legislation and University procedures.
- Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator
Coordinate HSW projects and priorities across the Faculty to ensure consistent service delivery and adherence to UQ Policies and Procedures; act as WHSC for the Faculty office, conducting inspections, training, and supporting HSW management plans and risk assessments.
- Provide leadership to First Aid Officers in the Faculty of EAIT, ensuring up-to-date training, adherence to policies, and maintenance of first aid kits; lead investigations into serious work injuries, incidents, and near misses, identifying corrective actions and resource needs.
- Coordinate workplace inspections and audits, develop and maintain effective communication systems for safety issues within the Faculty and identify and monitor compliance with mandatory training requirements across the Faculty.
- This position is part of a team that manages and coordinates activities for both HSW and Facilities. When required, provide support and assistance to the Facilities Coordinator and Facilities Team.

About You
- Hold a related bachelor’s degree with at least 4 years’ relevant experience, or possess extensive relevant experience and management expertise, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training, along with a formal qualification in health and safety or related discipline.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Workplace Health, Safety and Wellness principles and practices, including risk assessment, and their application in diverse university environments, with familiarity with relevant regulatory bodies and a range of hazards and risks (e.g., hazardous chemicals, equipment, manual handling, occupational hygiene, and psychosocial risks).
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills for effective communication with various individuals and agencies, and for promoting Workplace Health and Safety culture and training; high level computer proficiency, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, and internet software, with experience in the University’s in-house systems or the ability to learn their use.
- Show capacity to interpret and apply current legislation to work situations, lead teams in developing policies and procedures, use judgment, act independently, and take initiative within established frameworks and guidelines; demonstrate empathy and leadership in acute situations.
- Ability to work cooperatively with Faculty staff, University members, and external entities; current First Aid training or willingness to undertake it is well-regarded; extensive experience in a University or large organization and familiarity with University’s WHS policies is desirable.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, etc.
