About the opportunity
The
School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) at The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Aquatic Animal Health to join the team and to research the impact of our changing climate on risks associated on infectious diseases affecting the Australian seafood industry.
Working closely under the supervision of
Prof. Joy Becker and her colleagues, the successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts specialising in aquaculture and fisheries industries including members of peak industry bodies, aquatic veterinarians, and academic researchers.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- conduct scoping reviews describing the pathobiology of key diseases of interest to Australian seafood industries with emphasis on marine finfish, oysters, and prawns
- contribute to a consultation process with peak industries bodies to identify areas of focus for a risk assessment
- undertake hazard identification and risk assessment in aquatic animal industries that identifies and prioritizes infectious agents and syndromes under different future climate scenarios
- analyse and summarise data from the project
- prepare and submit milestone reports for the FRDC
- assist in the development and delivery of industry workshops and the preparation of non-technical project outputs such as infographics and project summaries.
About you

- a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., aquatic animal health, aquaculture, epidemiology, pathobiology of aquatic animals)
- familiarity with the pathobiology of key diseases in aquatic animals used in Australian aquaculture and fisheries industries
- familiarity and/or experience conducting risk assessments
- strong capability to prepare comprehensive research reports and present findings to both scientific and non-scientific audiences
- exceptional time management skills, with a consistent history of meeting project deadlines and delivering outputs on time
- the ability to initiate, plan, and execute research projects with minimal supervision, demonstrating a high level of self-direction
- a proven track record of publishing high-quality scientific research in peer-reviewed journals
- experience in applying for research funding or grants with an understanding of the research proposal process is a plus.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.
